Contractor agreement
Last updated October 20, 2026
Reviewed by counsel for the Connecticut beta. This text describes how Mezzo works today and may change as the product grows; we will tell you before a material change takes effect.
This agreement is between your business and Mezzo. It sits on top of the general Terms of Service. Version ca-2026-10-v1.
You are an independent business
You run your own business and your own crews. Mezzo does not employ you, direct how you do the work, or promise you any amount of work. You are responsible for your work, your licences and registrations, your insurance, your employees and subcontractors, and your taxes.
What Mezzo charges
- On every payment you receive through Mezzo (a job, an invoice or a service plan), Mezzo keeps a platform fee of 3%, and passes on the card or bank processing cost, estimated at Stripe’s rate: 2.9% + 30¢ for a card, or 0.8% capped at $5 for a bank debit.
- For the first 90 days after your first award on Mezzo there is no platform fee. Processing is still passed on.
- The customer pays exactly the agreed price and nothing extra. Mezzo does not add a surcharge for paying by card.
- Paying a subcontractor through a job has no Mezzo fee.
- We will show you the fee before you quote, and give you at least 30 days’ notice before changing the rates.
- Mezzo’s software (quotes, scheduling, invoices, books, pipeline, public page) costs nothing a month. The fee applies only when you are paid.
How you are paid
- Payments go through Stripe. You must finish Stripe’s payout setup before you can be paid, and you agree to Stripe’s own terms for connected accounts.
- For a job, the customer’s card is held and charged when they approve the work, or automatically 30 days after you mark it complete if there is no dispute. A deposit or staged payments follow the contract.
- If a payment is refunded, disputed or reversed, the amount comes back from the money Mezzo holds for you or from your later payouts. A refund of a job payment also returns Mezzo’s fee on that amount.
- Mezzo does not guarantee a customer’s payment for an invoice or a service plan beyond what Stripe collects. A service plan that lapses because the customer’s payments fail is not paid for the periods that were not collected.
Keeping work on Mezzo
When you find a customer through Mezzo, or the customer was invited by you through Mezzo, the payment for that job goes through Mezzo. Do not ask a customer to pay you outside Mezzo to avoid the fee. Work paid for outside Mezzo has no payment hold, no dispute route, no warranty-claim route and no entry in the home’s record, and Mezzo may limit your account if it finds you steering payments away from the platform.
Your licences, insurance and profile
- Keep your registrations, licences and insurance current and truthful. Mezzo checks them and shows customers what it found. A lapse stops you sending new quotes until it is fixed.
- You may share your verified certificate of insurance with a customer or association through Mezzo’s sharing link.
- Your public page, if you switch it on or are Mezzo Verified, shows your business name, town, trades, areas, badges, reviews and photos you added. It never shows your phone, email or street address.
Contracts, warranties and waivers
- You are responsible for complying with Connecticut’s home improvement requirements. Mezzo’s contract template is a convenience; it is not legal advice.
- If you give a workmanship warranty, a homeowner may make a claim under it through Mezzo. You agree to answer within a week. If you decline or stay silent, the homeowner may ask Mezzo’s staff to look. Their view is a recommendation, not a court ruling.
- A lien waiver you sign through Mezzo is a legal statement by your business. Only an owner or admin may sign, you must be authorised to sign for the business, and you must not sign an unconditional waiver for money you have not received.
Reviews
- You and the customer each review the other without seeing the other’s review first. Reviews are shown when both are in, or after 14 days.
- Do not write, buy, trade, ask for or pressure anyone into a review that is not their honest view. You may answer a review once and report one that breaks the rules; Mezzo’s staff decide.
Subcontractors and your team
You are responsible for the people you bring onto a job and for paying them. Mezzo totals what you pay each subcontractor for the 1099-NEC but does not file it for you.
Taxes and records
Stripe reports your payments for the 1099-K. The books and the ledger file in Mezzo are a convenience, not tax or accounting advice; have your accountant check them.
Service plans
If you sell a recurring service plan, you promise the visits it lists. A customer may cancel at any time; the plan then runs to the end of the period paid for. You may end a plan the same way. Mezzo does not refund part of a period unless you agree to.
Pausing, suspending and leaving
You may pause or close your business account at any time (open jobs, payments, disputes, plans and claims must be settled first). Mezzo may suspend an account that breaks this agreement, the Terms, or the law, and will tell you why.
Liability and changes
[Limits of liability, indemnity, governing law and venue to be added once counsel has reviewed this text.] We will tell you about material changes before they take effect, and ask you to accept the new version.
